International programme
By the mid 1980s the Foundation had forged links with the
World Health Organization. By this stage the priority was
to demonstrate the viability and feasibility of using fluoridated
milk as a dental public health measure, and through this collaboration
the first community based milk fluoridation scheme was introduced
in 1988, in Bulgaria.
The implementation of this scheme provided valuable experience
and encouraged others to pursue similar initiatives in a number
of countries. During the early 1990s the international milk
fluoridation programme began to take shape; projects were
implemented in the Russian
Federation, China,
Chile
and the United
Kingdom. More recently schemes have also been established
in Peru
and Thailand.
Within each country the aim has been to establish a demonstration
or pilot scheme to provide a model for the implementation
of further projects in other parts of that country or region.
This has been achieved in a number of schemes and there are
plans under consideration for further development in each
of the countries involved. The Foundation is also keen to
achieve expansion through the implementation of new schemes
in other countries, and would welcome
enquiries from potential collaborators. Further details
of scheme
development can be found on this site.
